GCSE results are out - hopefully you will be taking a big sigh of relief when you open up your results envelope! We certainly have faith that you will have received the grade that you were hoping for, or better. If you are perusing your studies and taking them to A-level standard, you won’t regret it! Studying AS and A2 Level Spanish is a fantastic opportunity to really get to grips with your language ability and also discover the history, geography and literature, along with many other Spanish or Latin American cultural aspects. Likewise, language means business - by taking a language for A-level you’re opening up many doors for your future. Employers are eager to find potential employees with language skills as not only can they speak another language and thus communicate with other people around the world, but studies show that they can communicate better generally with people through having improved social skills and being more aware of the differences between cultures. This can be essential for making good business deals. Hence, taking languages at GCSE and A-level can only be a positive experience.If you have decided to take A-level Spanish, it’s important to realise that the workload and expectations are significantly higher than at GCSE. However, don’t let this put you off – some students may worry about this jump but there are numerous ways to prepare you so that you can roll smoothly into the course and enjoy the learning experience rather than feel overwhelmed by the pace.Firstly, before 6th form starts, take a few minutes to refresh your memory. It has probably been at least a month since you’ve even looked at your Spanish books, so if you can review your GCSE revision notes, visit BBC’s GCSE Bitesize website, or play around with some Spanish learning apps such as Duolingo. You’ll find that vocabulary starts to stick in your mind again, all those grammar terms begin to make sense and little by little you’ll stick all the puzzle pieces together until your Spanish is at least where it was when you were studying hard for your exams, if not better. To do this, the Internet is your best bet – it’s overflowing with language resources – so there’s no excuse!Secondly, you could arrange a homestay in Spain or a language course with a host family as your summer holiday. They don’t always need to be planned in advance; it could be a spontaneous trip with a friend before going back to school. Homestays are a great way to understand the culture and improve your Spanish.Last, but certainly not least, are the Spanish review classes or Spanish A-level preparation classes. If you can fit in a few before your classes at school start, or even whilst you are studying, you’ll find this helps enormously.
